Walk the walk

To the Editors:

COMMUNITY FORUM

It is time I take pen and write this letter to challenge every single person to attend the Cleveland AIDS Walk this year. As an entertainer in this city and as an activist, I firmly believe that the AIDS Walk is the largest joint event held in this town. Every year now the AIDS Walk has grown in numbers and yet it is missing many members of our community.

For example, I believe that it is well past time that this event is attended by female impersonators throughout this city and even throughout the state. It is a sad state when only one female impersonator shows up in character at the Walk every year. God bless that one, but I am putting out a challenge to my fellow female impersonators and male entertainers to join me in character and walk this year.

We have been pioneers to raise money for AIDS and its various organizations for years. I believe it is well past time to hit the streets, make our presence known and raise thousands of dollars for many of the agencies in this town. It is time we as activists make a voice that changes the very atmosphere of our city, challenge the organizations to involve clients on their boards and on their staffs.

As entertainers, we above all people are the voice to the community. We stand in front of our audiences not only entertaining but also educating, informing and in some instances teaching. Ours is a war waged against a disease and ignorance, not against each other. It is past time we stop fighting each other, nipping each other down and playing games with everyone. We need to grow up and truly lead the way as our fellow "sisters" did at Stonewall not so very long ago.

We as an entire community need to recover from burnout and apathy. We need to

get the mayor of Cleveland to really do something about AIDS, to make sure clients and services come before anything else, and to set in our hearts the attitude that volunteerism is everything, that pay is not always required, but that to have helped is the true blessing.

As agencies and as people we need to band together and work together to end this disease. AIDS has taken far too many people from us. Have we forgotten Jasmine Baker, Brittany Fox, Gary McPherson, Mark Scott, Stella Montclair, Dino Carrieri, Zak Haley, Linus Herrell, Frankie Giammarino, Jonathon Lutes, Timothy Hilyard and the thousands of others? Or do we simply not care anymore? AIDS has touched and affected our very lives, and we in some cases have grown cold and indifferent.

Take the time this year and join me in the AIDS Walk, lest we forget.

The best show

To the Editors:

Last Thursday, July 17, I had the distinct pleasure of attending not only the wonderfully funny Grease! but also "Care For a Cure," which was a benefit performance at Numbers Nite Club presented by the stars of

Grease! immediately after their performance at the Palace Theatre.

The benefit was presented to raise funds for the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

While I have attended many such benefits in the last few years, I must thank all those involved in this production for one of the best benefit performances I have ever experienced. From the start it was evident that this was a cast who believed very strongly in what they were doing and worked very hard to make it the joyous and moving experience it was for everyone who was there that night.

My only regret was that more people weren't there to enjoy this funny and moving show. While I can only speculate why there weren't more people there that night, it would serve no purpose. I only want to encourage everyone in the community to support such future efforts as a painless (enjoyable, even) way to support a very important and worthwhile cause.

Consider this: The performers you'll see at these benefits usually choose their own material for the show. Because it's their rare chance to perform something of their own choosing, and because they're freely dedicating their time and efforts to a cause they believe in, you'll see them at their absolute best. And believe me, my friend, that's an unexpected treat But don't take my word for it. Try it, you might like it.
